School-Age Childcare & Novato Summer Camps: For ages 6 - 14

Welcome to NYC's School-Age Playcare Program. The Center will provide your family with a very special and supportive childcare experience. You can be assured that your child is receiving safe, nurturing care while you are at work. Our School-Age Childcare program is designed to let parents focus on their work or educational goals with peace of mind, knowing their child is nurtured and engaged. You will find the School-Age Childcare staff eager to talk with you about your child and the program.

The school year schedule runs concurrently with the NUSD public school calendar-from 6:30 to 9:00 am and from 2:30 to 6:30 pm.

The vacation schedule operates during non-school days, from 6:30am to 6:30pm. Additionally, Novato summer camps are offered during school vacation.

School-Age Childcare Offers More than Childcare:

Parent Vision Team - A component of our Parent Services Project, this group meets the 2nd Tuesday of each month, with dinner and childcare provided. Parents develop leadership skills while planning parenting workshops, social and recreational events, and offering input on their children's curriculum.

Annual Haunted House - A School-Age Childcare tradition since 1998, this ghoulish attraction evokes screams from all of our Playcare participants, and due to high demand as of October, 2005, is now open to the public.

Our Thanksgiving Potluck - A crowd pleaser every year, all of our childcare families come together for a night of feasting, entertainment and giving thanks.

School-Age Childcare Teen Volunteer Program - Students from Novato, San Marin, Marin Catholic and St. Vincent's High Schools come to mentor our children weekly, adding value to our program while earning community service hours and receiving training.

School-Age Childcare Basketball League - Formerly exclusive to School-Age Childcare participants only, for the first time in Spring of 2006, this extremely popular league will be open to youth in the greater community.

How School-Age Childcare Works:
Children are divided into six groups based on age and level of social development, and each group has its own teacher. Groups are color-coded as follows:

Gold Group: Kindergarten & 6 year olds
Purple Group: 6 & 7 year olds (1st-2nd graders)
Yellow Group: 7 & 8 year olds (2nd-3rd graders)
Orange Group: 8 & 9 year olds (4th-5th graders)
Green Group: 10 & 11 year olds (5th-6th graders)
Blue Group: 12 to 14 year olds (7th-8th graders)

Note that there is overlapping of ages, which gives us the flexibility to move children upward into the next group based on their readiness level, not their age.

Our School-Age Childcare Program Director, Rosemary Shea, manages the curriculum, transportation and staff training with a teamwork approach. Our nurturing team of 10 teachers meet licensing requirements, are well trained and experienced in working with children. 6 of them have been working at the Center between 5 to 19 years, bring consistency of care to our programs.

Activities and equipment are age appropriate, by group. For example, the Blue Group, comprised of 11 to 14 year olds, take part in a variety of pre-teen/teen activities in the Teen Room, including fundraising for a long-distance trip, playing games, listening to music and helping with the younger children. A daily schedule is posted, and children rotate through our various rooms, where enriching activities await them.

Fees:
Fees are all-inclusive, and vary according to hours of usage per month. Summer camps are a flat weekly fee with before- and after-care available. For more information, please contact Rosemary Shea at 892-1643, ext. 237, or by e-mail through our contact page.
